During the past few days the DomPost has been running a series of stories, under the heading Helping Out, profiling interesting and different volunteers.  A couple of those written about to date, have been Tania Chinnaiyah, a volunteer with Mary Potter Hospice and Marijke Pritchare who is working with literacy programmes at Rimutaka Prison. Marijke found her role through Volunteer Hutt’s outreach in Upper Hutt.  These articles will be a great stimulus for those who are thinking about volunteering to take the next step in 2009 – and ring Volunteer Wellington (or Hutt or Porirua) for an interview.  The numbers are 499 4570, 566 6786 (Hutt) and 237 5355 (Porirua).

I was browsing through DomPost today and was pleased to see the lead letter from Turiana Turia, Community & Voluntary Sector Minister, commenting on these great January volunteer articles in the capital’s daily newspaper. She added a few more interesting statistics – in 2007 127,000 Wellingtonians did voluntary work adding that in the art and cultural secot and in donations to hospices, health and illness prevention, Wellingtonians volunteer in greater numbers and give more than the national average. In commending the articles Turiana said: ‘you have helped raise awareness about this workforce and for that I thank you.’
