World Refugee Awareness Day is coming up on Saturday 20th June  – many volunteers referred by Volunteer Wellington are working to support to people with refugee backgrounds and communities.  Some organisations that Volunteer Wellington refer volunteers to accross the Wellington Region are Refugee Services and Changemakers Refugee Forum.

Show your support for people with refugee backgrounds by voting for these 3 photographs taken by Branka Cicak of Volunteering New Zealand and entered into Cannon’s Competition open to Not-For-Profit Organisations.

Picture 1: We learn to dance in Porirua celebrating the movement between two worlds, our heritage, OUR NOW. Volunteering flows rhythmically through every part of our lives.

Picture 2: Engaging with one another is part of our pasts, our present and our hope for the future; a volunteering mentoring programme with refugee communities.

Picture 3: Holding on to who you are in your new home can be lonely and frightening. Volunteering blends friendship, tradition – new belonging.
